Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just a little girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth was born in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in high school. However, she left school in the span of two years in order to pursue an acting career. Her path wasn't without its challenges. In New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines. acting work she longed for was not available. Her next job was as an "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and returned to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make ends meet as an usherette in the morning, while working at night in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She took classes in drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
